Lead Web Engineer, Client Manager, and Engineering Manager on a 3+ year retainer (via Solspace Inc.) for Swimlane, a security automation company. When I took over, the website was crashing multiple times per month and the CMS architecture was rigid, making content updates slow and difficult. I stabilized the system, componentized the entire frontend, and transformed it into a flexible, high-performing marketing platform.
For a security automation company, website reliability is not optional. Their prospects expect the same stability from the marketing site that they would from the product itself. This context shaped every decision we made.
Project Timeline
Phase 1: Stabilization The first priority was stopping the crashes. I assessed the existing architecture, identified the root causes of instability, and implemented fixes that eliminated monthly downtime. The system went from multiple crashes per month to zero.
Phase 2: Componentization The original CMS architecture was static and inflexible. Content was hardcoded or structured in ways that made updates require developer intervention. I rebuilt the frontend and CMS architecture with 10+ reusable content components, giving the marketing team full control over page layouts and content without needing to involve developers.
Phase 3: Security and Compliance I implemented a flexible Content Security Policy that balanced security requirements with marketing needs. Added GDPR compliance features and integrated security audits into the deployment pipeline, ensuring every release passed automated checks for vulnerable dependencies and security issues.
Phase 4: Redesign and Animation With a stable, flexible foundation in place, I led a section-by-section redesign of the website. Introduced modern, animation-based designs that improved user experience while maintaining the performance gains. Every section was rebuilt systematically, ensuring consistency and maintainability.
Removing Workflow Friction Through Intelligent Systems
- Eliminated developer bottleneck for content updates by building componentized, marketing-team-friendly CMS blocks
- Reduced page creation time from days to hours by enabling marketing to assemble pages from pre-built components
- Achieved 85%+ Lighthouse scores across all areas through systematic performance optimization
- Automated security audits in the CI/CD pipeline, catching vulnerable Composer dependencies before deployment
- Implemented flexible CSP that protected the site without breaking third-party marketing tools
- Built animation systems that enhanced UX without sacrificing Core Web Vitals performance
- Standardized component patterns across the site, making future development faster and more predictable
A security automation company cannot afford an unreliable website. The work with Swimlane demonstrates how systematic stabilization, componentization, and process improvements can transform a problematic system into a stable, flexible marketing platform. The same principles apply to any organization where reliability and flexibility matter.
